"Watch your mouth!"

The Law as given by Moses to Israel was designed to build a cohesive society. Each aspect of the Law was based on the value that God placed on people, their lives, their relationship, their property, and their reputation. Each of these commands were reiterated in the New Covenant making us to know that they are not to be taken lightly. Specifically the sixth commandment "thou shall not kill." This command did not forbid the taking of a life as the Law did permit capital punishment as well as the legitimacy of war. This command speaks directly to the deliberate murder of a person outside of the stated provisions that flagrantly violated the sanctity of life.

Since the Word of God is progressive and the relevance of the Word is expansive we must take into consideration the power of spoken words. The world was formed, framed, and fixed by the spoken word. Many people have been destroyed by the power of the tongue. Yes, that filthy red rag between our lips can become more deadly than the assault of the enemy. With our tongue we have the capacity to minimize our own progress, assassinate anothers character, and to tie the hand of God to act on own behalf. This is equivalent to killing. Solomon declares to us that there is both life and death in the power of the tongue. He goes on to say, we are snared by the words of our mouth and we have the capacity to snare others.
